This statue of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry was unveiled on Memorial Day in 1897 in Boston. It depicts the famous All-Black Military regiment that heroically fought in the Civil War. The award-winning movie “Glory” depicts their story on film and is one of many movies that have been made celebrating Black soldiers.

Red Tails – This 2012 film tells the story about The Tuskegee Airmen who were famous World War II flying aces that were critical to helping to win the war. George Lucas (of Star Wars fame) produced this tribute film. Stars: Terrence Howard, Cuba Gooding Jr.
Crimson Tide – On a U.S nuclear sub, a young first officer stands up to the captain who he believes is about to wrongly launch a nuclear attack. He is forced to lead a mutiny on the sub. Stars: Denzel Washington, Gene Hackman
Miracle at St. Anna – Directed by Spike Lee, this movie is about four Black soldiers who get trapped in an Italian village during World War II. Stars: Derek Luke, Michael Ealey, Laz Alonso, Omar Benson Miller
Rules of Engagement – A Black officer is put on trial for firing at a group of civilians and it looks like he is being set up for failure. All of the other military witnesses who could help him were killed. Stars: Samuel L. Jackson, Tommy Lee Jones

The Tuskegee Airmen – This 1995 film tells the true story about the African-American pilots who overcame racism to become one of the most respected and heroic fighter groups in World War II. Stars: Laurence Fishburne, Allen Payne, Malcolm Jamal-Warner
The Negro Soldier- This 1944 film depicts the sacrifices of Black soldiers all the way back to the revolutionary war. The film quality is not great, but this is an important historical film that was produced by the U.S. War Department.
Home of the Brave – This 1949 movie is only available on VHS video at this time. It is about a Black soldier who goes on a secretive reconnaissance mission with four White soldiers during World War II. Stars: Jeff Corey, Lloyd Bridges
Black Brigade – This 1970 movie was also released under the name “Carter’s Army.” A Black troop is tasked with the hard assignment to take an important bridge away from the Nazis while being led by a redneck. Stars: Richard Pryor, Rosie Grier, Moses Gunn, Billy Dee Williams
The Manchurian Candidate – A war veteran is haunted by dreams of something sinister that occurred during the war. It is somehow tied to a vice-presidential nominee and the Manchurian Global corporation. Stars: Denzel Washington, Jeffrey Wright
