Description


Produced by Motown's Berry Gordy, "The Wiz" is the African-American version of "The Wizard of Oz".

Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Richard Pryor and Lena Horne are some of the stars of this Black Classic Movie.

Diana Ross stars as Dorothy who is a kindergarten teacher in Harlem who gets suddenly caught in a blizzard while looking for her dog Toto. She encounters Michael Jackson (the Scarecrow), Nipsey Russell (the Tin Man) and Ted Ross (the Cowardly Lion) while she is on her search for the Great Wizard (Richard Pryor) to help send her back home.

Lena Horne also stars in this movie as Glinda the Good Witch and Mabel King is Evillene.

A great family film with a soulful twist, "The Wiz" is an African-American classic.

 
Trivia


• "The Wiz" is based on the successful Broadway production of The Wiz that ran for four years and over
1600 performances.  Motown purchased the rights to make The Wiz film version in 1977.

• Stephanie Mills played Dorothy in the Broadway production of the The Wiz.  She was going to play Dorothy
in the film, but was replaced by Diana Ross.  Diana Ross got the role because Universal Pictures said that
they would help finance the movie if Diana Ross played Dorothy.

• Mabel King, who plays Evillene, the Wicked Witch of the West, and Ted Ross, who plays the Cowardly Lion,
played the same roles in The Wiz’s Broadway production.

• "The Wiz" was Michael Jackson’s first feature-length film.

• In the “Everybody Rejoice” segment, Luther Vandross, Patti Austin, Robin Givens, Roberta Flack and
Gwen Guthrie can all be seen as choir members.

• "The Wiz" was filmed in New York City, with the Emerald City scenes being filmed on location at The World Trade Center.

• Berry Gordy was the executive producer of The Wiz and The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars, another
Top 100 Black Classic Movies film.  Berry Gordy also directed Mahogany, which is another Top 100 Black
Classic Movie starring Diana Ross.

• Nominated for four 1979 Academy Awards:  Best Cinematography, Best Music, Original Song Score, Best Costume Design and Best Art Direction, Set Decoration

• Michael Jackson won a 1980 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture.
