Description
"Soul Food" is about the matriarch of a family, Mother Joe (Irma P. Hall) and her three daughters, Teri (Vanessa L. Williams), Maxine (Vivica Fox), and Bird (Nia Long). Every Sunday, they get together with their entire families for a Sunday soul food dinner at Mother Joe’s house.
However, when Mother Joe has a stroke and goes into a coma, the longstanding tradition might come to an end because the three sisters can’t seem to overcome their problems with each other.
Concerned, Mother Joe’s grandson, Ahmad (Brandon Hammond) decides that something needs to be done and starts a plan of action.
The result is a heartwarming drama about family relationships and love.

∙ The African American director of Soul Food, George Tillman Jr., also wrote it. He based the movie on his own family experiences.
∙ Director George Tillman Jr. says that he first became inspired to make movies after seeing the film, Cooley High. (Cooley High is another Top 100 BlackClassicMovies.com film.)
∙ The Soul Food movie soundtrack contains a number of chart-topping songs. Most notably, “A Song for Mama,” which was a Top 10 hit in 1997. “A Song for Mama” was written and produced by Babyface and performed by Boys II Men.
