"She’s Gotta Have It" is a comedy about a young, sexually liberated woman named Nola Darling (Tracey Camilla Johns).  She has three boyfriends with very different personalities, who are all aware that the others exist.

Jamie Overstreet (Tommy Redmond Hicks) is polite and well-meaning.

Greer Childs (John Canada Terrell) is a self-obsessed male model.

Mars (Spike Lee) is a comical bicycle messenger.

Each man tries to get Nola to get rid of her other boyfriends and commit solely to them.  As the jealousies soar, so does the comedy.

What does Nola decide to do?

∙  "She’s Gotta Have It" was made in 12 days with a budget of only $175,000.  Because of budget restrictions, there were no retakes of any scenes in the film.  The movie went on to make over $7 million at the box office and was considered an enormous success.

∙  She’s Gotta Have It was the first commercially successful film for director Spike Lee.  Spike Lee also directed these other Top 100 BlackClassicMovies.com films: 4 Little Girls, Do the Right Thing, Malcolm X and School Daze.

∙  Bill Lee, who is the father of Spike Lee, did the jazz soundtrack for She’s Gotta Have It.  Bill Lee is a professional bass player and has played for many artists like Aretha Franklin.  He has composed the soundtrack for many of Spike Lee’s films.

∙  She’s Gotta Have It is considered a breakthrough movie that helped usher in the Black Independent Film Movement of the 1980s.

∙  "She’s Gotta Have It" was Spike Lee's first theatrically-released film.
