∙ School Daze was also written by the director Spike Lee. Lee says that he based the movie on his four years at Morehouse College.
∙ School Daze was heavily criticized by movie review critics when it was released, but it was the most profitable film that year for Columbia pictures. School Daze grossed over $14 million at the box office.
∙ School Daze was also criticized in the African-American community because some people felt that Spike Lee was unfairly making public some of the real color and class tensions that exist in the African-American community.
∙ To help foster the tension between the “wannabes” and “jigaboos” in School Daze, Spike Lee put the “wannabes” in much nicer hotel accommodations than the “jigaboo” group. Thus, the animosity between the groups was real during filming.
∙ Spike Lee was kicked off the campus of Morehouse College because the school was concerned about how he was going to portray historically black colleges. For this reason, he was not allowed to do any filming on Spelman’s campus. He was allowed, however, to film at Morris Brown College.
∙ The School Daze movie soundtrack was a top seller on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Album Charts.
