Where "Roots" left off, "Roots:The Next Generations" begins.

From the post Civil War period to the mid 1970s, "Roots:The Next Generations" covers Reconstruction,
Jim Crow laws and the Civil Rights Movement.

This landmark mini-series dramatically tells the Haley’s family story including Alex Haley’s embarking on a
genealogical quest to document his family’s roots.

A winner of two Emmy Awards and featuring a cast of major acting talent, "Roots: The Next Generations"
is a poignant and emotionally powerful film series.

•  "Roots: The Next Generations" is the sequel to the enormously successful Roots, another Black Classic
Movies Top 100 film.  "Roots: The Next Generations" first airing was in 1979 for seven consecutive evenings.

• Originally, the studio did not plan to do a sequel to Roots because they thought that it would be a flop.  After
"Roots" aired and was extraordinarily successful, the studio immediately began making plans to do this sequel. 
"Roots: The Next Generations" had a much bigger production budget than the first Roots mini-series.

•  Alex Haley was an on-set advisor for "Roots: The Next Generations" and "Roots."  He did whatever he could do
to help make the mini-series as accurate and realistic as possible, including showing pictures and telling stories
about his ancestors to the actors and film crew.

• "Roots: The Next Generations" is based on seven chapters of Alex Haley’s book,
“Roots: The Saga of an American Family,” and some additional information that he provided to the studio and writers.

• A significant amount of "Roots: The Next Generations" is based on the Haley family’s experiences in
Henning, Tennessee.  This is where Alex Haley spent part of his boyhood and is also where he is buried.

•  Won two 1979 Emmy Awards: Outstanding Limited Series, Outstanding Actor in a Limited Series or
Special (Marlon Brando).

•  Nominated for five 1979 Emmy Awards: Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or
Special (Al Freeman, Jr.),  Outstanding Actor in a Limited Series or Special (Paul Winfield),
Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Special (Ruby Dee),
Outstanding Writing in a Limited Series or Special (Ernest Kinov), and Outstanding Achievement in Makeup.
