Description

When matriarch Lena Younger (Claudia McNeil) receives a $10,000 insurance check for the death of her husband, the family is excited about what it means for their future. Unfortunately, conflict arises when all of them have different ideas about how to spend the money.
The mother (Claudia McNeil) wants to use it as a down payment on a new home. The son (Sidney Poitier) believes it should be used to help him start his own business, and the daughter (Diana Sands) is hoping to use part of it to pay for medical school.
Amidst this family tension, social and racial prejudice rears its head in an ugly way. Will the family be able to stay united and achieve their dreams?
∙ This movie is based on the play, A Raisin in the Sun, by African-American playwright Lorraine Hansberry. “A Raisin in the Sun” was the first successful Broadway play written by a black female playwright.
