"Miss Evers Boys" is a Home Box Office (HBO) film starring Alfre Woodard and Laurence Fishburne.  It tells the shocking, true story of The Tuskegee Experiment that resulted in the deaths of numerous African American men over a period of decades.

It is 1932 when loyal, devoted Nurse Eunice Evers (Alfre Woodard) is invited to work with Dr. Brodus (Joe Morton) and Dr. Douglas (Craig Sheffer) on the federally-funded program to treat syphilis patients in Alabama.  Free treatment is offered to those who test positive for the disease, including Caleb Humphries (Laurence Fishburne) and Willie Johnson (Obba Babatunde).

But when the government withdraws its funding, other money is offered for what will become known as “The Tuskegee Experiment.”  This experiment is a study of the effects of syphilis on patients who don’t receive treatment.

The men are being led to believe that they are being cared for, when in fact they are being denied the medicine that could cure them.  Miss Evers is faced with a terrible dilemma – to abandon the experiment and tell her patients or to remain silent and offer only comfort.

It is a life or death decision that will affect her life and all the lives of Miss Evers’ Boys.

∙  Miss Evers’ Boys is based on a true story.  From 1932 to 1972, the U.S. Public Health Service conducted a secret experiment on poor African-American sharecroppers in Macon County, Alabama. Six hundred men were in the study and by the time there was public outcry about it, 473 men had died.

∙  Although fictionalized, the title character, Eunice Evers, is based on the real Eunice Evers who was a nurse for the program.

∙  The movie is an adaptation of the Pultizer Prize winning stage play, Miss Evers’ Boys, by David Feldshuh.  David Feldshuh has been credited with raising awareness of this tragic experiment.  He created the stage play and co-produced an educational video entitled, “Susceptible to Kindness.”

∙  The stage play, Miss Evers’ Boys, was based on the book, Bad Blood: The Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment by James H. Jones.

∙  The director of this movie, Joseph Sargeant, also directed A Lesson Before Dying, another Top 100 BlackClassicMovies.com film.
