Movie Summary
"Malcolm X" is considered to be the best portrayals of the life and times of slain civil rights
leader Malcolm X.
Denzel Washington stars as Malcolm X portraying over four decades of his life – from Malcolm X’s days as a street hustler named Malcolm Little, to his ascendancy in the Nation of Islam and as a national civil rights activist.
Director Spike Lee masterfully captures the multi-faceted life and times of Malcolm X in this
tremendous biopic.
This is one of the few African-American films to be selected for inclusion in the Library of Congress, National Film Registry.
Trivia
• "Malcolm X" is often mentioned by critics and others as one of Spike Lee’s finest films that he ever made. (The other one mentioned quite frequently is Do the Right Thing, another Top 100 Black Classic Movies film.)
• Because Warner Brothers Studio balked at giving Spike Lee the entire $33 million he wanted to make Malcolm X, Spike Lee sought $11 million in investment money from other African-American celebrities. The donors were: Oprah Winfrey, Bill Cosby, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Janet Jackson, Prince, Tracy Chapman and Peggy Cooper Cafritz (co-founder of the Duke Ellington Ellington School of the Arts in Washington D.C.)
• After the assassination scene, all of the movie scenes showing Malcolm X is real footage of him.
• "Malcolm X" was the first ever American produced and non-documentary movie to be given permission to shoot in Mecca.
• Dr. Betty Shabazz, the widow of Malcolm X, was a consultant to the movie.
• "Malcolm X" the movie is an adaptation of the book, "The Autobiography of Malcolm X", which is the autobiography of
Malcolm X as told to writer Alex Haley.
• "Malcolm X" won four 1995 NAACP Image Awards: Outstanding Motion Picture, Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture
(Denzel Washington), Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture (Al Freeman Jr.) and Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture (Angela Bassett).
• "Malcolm X" was nominated for two 1993 Academy Awards: Best Actor in a Leading Role (Denzel Washington) and Best Costume Design. The movie was also nominated for a 1993 Golden Globe Award: Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture (Denzel Washington).
