Description

As the title suggests, everyone is surprised when black Dr. John Prentice (Sidney Poitier) is brought home to meet his white fiancée’s parents.  The parents, Matthew Drayton (Spencer Tracy) and Christina (Katharine Hepburn) are put to the test about their long-held liberal beliefs when their daughter, Joey Drayton (Katharine Houghton) wants to marry an African-American man.

Dr. Prentice’s parents, played by Beah Richards and Roy Glenn, are also invited to the dinner to meet their potential new white daughter-in-law.  They, too, have to confront their feelings about the interracial union.

Everyone has something to say including Tillie the maid (Isabell Sanford) and the local minister Monsignor Ryan (Cecil Kellaway).

Will the marriage proceed with everyone’s blessing?

Trivia

•"Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner" was considered groundbreaking for its time because it dealt with the socially taboo subject of interracial marriage.  In fact, up until June of the same year that the film was released, interracial marriage was still against the law in 17 Southern U. S. states.

• This film was showing in theatres at the time that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated.  There was a line in the film where the maid says to Sidney Poitier, “Who do you think you are, Martin Luther King?”  Upon King’s assassination, the studios immediately called the theatres and had this line cut from the movie.

• This was Spencer Tracy’s last film as he died 17 days after filming was complete.  Katharine Hepburn says that she decided to never watch the completed film because the memories of Spencer Tracy were too painful.

• The director of this movie, Stanley Kramer, also directed The Defiant Ones, another Top 100 Black Classic Movie.
