"Cabin in the Sky" was one of the few all-black cast movies to be made by a Hollywood studio in the 1940s.
It has an all star cast of great African-American actors and actresses including: Eddie "Rochester" Anderson, Lena Horne,
Ethel Waters and Rex Ingram.
Eddie Anderson plays "Little Joe" who is a rascally husband that is being tempted to leave his wife for a beautiful, but street-wise woman named Georgia Brown. Louise Beavers plays Petunia, who is Little Joe's wife and Lena Horne is the temptress, Georgia Brown.
As the story unfolds, Little Joe eventually finds himself in a tug of war for his soul with emissaries for the Lord and the devil rooting him on. (Rex Ingram plays both of these roles.) Which way will he go?
Can good triumph over evil?
Little Joe's wife, Petunia, says, “Sometimes when you fight the devil, you gotta jab him with his own pitchfork.”
"Cabin in the Sky" is a classical and musical treasure that the entire family can enjoy. |
