Amos 'n Andy Radio and Television Show

The Amos 'n Andy Show first appeared on radio in 1929 as a fifteen minute broadcast.
It became enormously popular and lasted on radio for over 35 years. It was radio's first
nationally successful radio serial program. Amos 'n Andy aired on television from
1951 to 1953 for a total of 78 filmed episodes.

There was one Amos 'n Andy film done in 1930 called Check and Double Check. The film
version had a mixed race cast of Black and White actors. Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll
were the White actors who starred in the original radio version of Amos 'n Andy. They agreed
to star in the film version, but later regretted it. Gosden is quoted as saying the
Check and Double Check was "just about the worst movie ever." He and Correll were asked to
do a sequel and they refused.

The Amos 'n Andy Television Show featured an all black cast. Some of the cast members were:
Spencer Williams, Alvin Childress, Tim Moore, Ernestine Wade, Amanda Randolph and Lillian Randolph.
The show ran in syndication with reruns until the 1960s when it was taken off the air because of protests
by the NAACP.
