glory road dvdGlory Road.  (Rating: PG – for racial violence and epithets) This is a sports movie is based on a true story.  In 1965-66 a basketball coach at a southern university did the unthinkable.  He made his starting lineup all African-American.  This movie tells the story about the team and all the hardships they overcame  as they unexpectedly made their way to the NCAA Championship game against Kentucky’s all White basketball team. This team is credited with making a breakthrough in basketball that lead to more African-Americans playing college basketball.

(Rating: PG- mild language and brief violence) This lighthearted, but touching movie is loosely based on the true story behind Jamaica’s first Winter Olympics Bobsled Team.  They don’t have snow in Jamaica!  No, they don’t.  But sprinter Darice Bannock wanted to be in the Olympics so badly that he was able to convince a coach to help him create and train a team.  In a fun and entertaining way, their story unfolds.

(Rating: PG – mild crude humor) Cuba Gooding Jr. stars in this cute, comedy movie about a Miami dentist who discovers that he was adopted and then travels to Alaska to claim an inheritance left to him by his birth mother.  After getting there, he finds out that his mother didn’t leave him money, but dogs.  However these dogs are competitive snow dogs and before he knows it, the inexperienced dentist is racing them in the annual Alaskan Artic Challenge.

Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia.  In a community filled with racial tensions, Coach Boone arrives from North Carolina to be the new head coach of the local high school football team.  The problem, however, is that he has to get the White and Black players to play together during a time of intense racial tension in the community.  This film won a NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Motion Picture.

that's so raven dvdThat’s So Raven.  (Disney TV Show – Rating: G) “That’s So Raven” was a television series that aired on Disney from 2003-2007 and starred Raven Symone (who became famous for her role as Olivia on “The Cosby Show”) In this Disney teen show, she plays Raven Baxter, a teenager with the ability to see into the future.  This leads to many hilarious situations for her and her friends and family.  The entire television series is not available on DVD, but you can get DVDs focused on a particular theme containing three episodes on each one.
