| Description |
Bill Cosby and Phylicia Rashad star in "The Cosby Show" - one of the most watched TV shows
of the 1980s.
"The Cosby Show" was the first TV show to feature an upscale Black family and challenge the common
stereotypes of African-Americans on TV.
Bill Cosby stars as Dr. Heathcliff Huxtable, an obstetrician/gynecologist, who loves his wife and is totally
devoted to his family. His wife, Clair (Phylicia Rashad) is an attorney and they have five children - Sondra (Sabrina LeBeauf), Denise (Lisa Bonet), Theo (Malcolm-Jamal Warner), Vanessa (Tempestt Bledsoe) and Rudy (Keisha Knight Pulliam).
Always with a humorous twist, each episode of "The Cosby Show" dealt with a situation facing one or
more members of the Huxtable family. (Usually one of the children.)
"The Cosby Show" challenged many racial stereotypes that had been perpetuated about African-American
families, but it did so without being preachy. Dr. Huxtable (Bill Cosby) was a strong and influential
father, both parents were professionals, and the family lived comfortably.
"The Cosby Show" aired television for eight seasons, from 1984-1982. The show won six Emmy awards,
three Golden Globe and five NAACP Image Awards.
Funny, heartwarming and groundbreaking, "The Cosby Show" is a timeless classic that should
be in every family's TV show collection. |

| Trivia |
• The television show, "A Different World"
was a spin off of "The Cosby Show." The storyline for
"A Different World" was based on Denise Huxtable (Lisa Bonet) leaving home to go to college at a
fictitious, historically-Black college named Hillman. The show was going to be about Denise's experiences
at Hillman college, but during the first year, Lisa Bonet got pregnant and had to leave the show. Nevertheless,
"A Different World" continued without her and became a ratings success, airing on television for six seasons.
• "The Cosby Show" was truly a surprise hit. Some industry executives didn't think that TV viewers would
be interested in a TV show about an upscale African-American family. In fact, ABC rejected "The Cosby Show"
before NBC decided to do it. Consequently, "The Cosby Show" helped NBC regain its financial footing and
become the ratings leader on Thursday nights.
• "The Cosby Show" is credited with opening the door for other Black television sitcoms like "A Different World",
"The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" and "Family Matters ."
• Sammy Davis Jr. made one of his last TV appearances on "The Cosby Show" in an episode titled
"No Way, Baby." He died one year later from throat cancer.
• "The Cosby Show" was the fifth television show series that Bill Cosby starred in. His other TV programs
prior to this one were:
• "I Spy" (1964 - 1968)
• "The Bill Cosby Show" (1969)
• "The New Bill Cosby Show" (1970)
• "Cos" (1976) |
