"Room 222" was considered one fo the most progressive television shows of its time. Based on a fictional
high school in Los Angeles named Walt Whitman High, "Room 222" was a powerful TV drama laced with humor.

At the center of the show was a Black high school teacher named Pete Dixon (Lloyd Haynes) who taught
history in Room 222. Charismatic and easy-going, Dixon not only showed an interest in the educatio of his
students but also their personal lives.

Dixon is assisted by school counselor Liz McIntyre (Denise Nicholas) who is also his love interest. The cast
is rounded out with a strong interracial friendship between Dixon and high school principal Seymour Kaufman
(Michael Constantine) and the perpetually optimist younger teacher Alice Johnson (Karen Valentine).

"Room 222" aired for five years from 1969-1974 and was a Top 10 rated TV show during its entire run.

• The school that is shown as Walt Whitman High is Los Angeles High School in Los Angeles, California.
The school building is no longer standing as it was badly damaged in a 1971 earthquake. To make the
show more realistic, some scenes for "Room 222" were filmed at Los Angeles High School.

• "Room 222" gave top billing to two African-American actors, Lloyd Haynes and Denise Nicholas. This was
very unusual for the time. The only other major television show prior to "Room 222" that had given top
billing to an African-American was "Julia" which starred Diahann Carroll.

• Lloyd Haynes (who plays Pete Dixon) was a U.S. Marine prior to becoming an actor. He served in the
Marine Corps for twelve years. He has appeared in a number of TV shows before being cast as Pete Dixon
in "Room 222." Dixon passed away in 1986 from lung cancer.

• "Room 222" was the first major ongoing acting role for Denise Nicholas. Nicholas performed in a number
of television programs prior to being cast at Liz McIntyre in "Room 222." Denise Nicholas has also starred
in the Top 100 Black Classic Movie "Let's Do It Again."
