Bill Cosby and Robert Culp starred as international undercover agents in "I Spy."
Bill Cosby won three Emmy Awards for his outstanding performance in this landmark TV show.
No racial stereotyping whatsoever. Instead, you have a cool, intelligent and successful Black undercover
agent named Alexander Scott (Bill Cosby). He travels the world under the guise of being a tennis trainer and
traveling companion for Kelly Robinson (Robert Culp). Together, they work secretly for the Pentagon on
special missions around the world.
"I Spy" was the first network drama with an African-American star and it shattered the prevailing racial
stereotypes of Black men on TV. Never before had audience seen a Black man on television operate so
smoothly around the world. Never before had audiences seen an African-American do his job with respect
and no racism. Never before had a working relationship between a Black and White man been depicted so
casually with no hints of racial tension. "I Spy" was groundbreaking!
In addition to starring Bill Cosby, "I Spy" also had guest appearances from many famous African-American
stars of the day such as Cicely Tyson, Eartha Kitt, Godfrey Cambridge and Nancy Wilson.
"I Spy" aired on TV from 1965-1968 and won a 1967 Golden Globe Award for Best TV show. |
