After Sam Wheat (Patrick Swayze) is killed in a mugging, he returns as a ghost to save his sweetheart Molly Jensen (Demi Moore).  He enlists the help of psychic, Oda Mae Brown (Whoopi Goldberg) who agrees to help him protect his sweetheart and uncover the real truth behind his death.

A romantic love story and comedy, Ghost was a tremendous box-office success.  When Whoopi Goldberg won the 1991 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, this was the first time in over fifty years that an African-American won this award.

∙  Whoopi Goldberg received a 1991 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.  She was only the second African-American actress to win this award and the first African-American in over fifty years to receive an Academy Award.  (The first Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress was in 1940, when Hattie McDaniel won it for her role in Gone With the Wind, another Top 100 BlackClassicMovies.com film.)
