Documentary Summary

"The Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till" is a groundbreaking documentary about the brutal murder of
14 year old Emmett Till.

Keith Beauchamp worked for 10 years trying to uncover the truth behind the brutal murder of Emmett Till.
In August, 1955, Till's body was found in the Tallahatchie River. He had been abducted from his relative's home
by white men who were angry about him whistling to a white woman. A trial was held, but the men were
found innocent. Later, they confessed to the crime in "Look" magazine but couldn't be tried again because of
the double jeopardy law. But was this really the whole story? What really happened? Were there more people
involved with the killing than previously thought? Could the murderers still be brought to justice?

If you thought you knew everything that there is to know about Emmett Till and his horrific murder, you
might be surprised at what you learn in "The Untold Story of Emmett Till." Through interviews with numerous
eyewitnesses and archival film footage, Beauchamp provides a riveting and insightful account of Emmett Till's
murder and trial.

"The Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till" documentary is credited with helping to get the U.S. Justice
Department to reopen the Emmett Till murder case.

Trivia

• Documentarian Keith Beauchamp worked on "The Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till" for almost ten years.
When he met Emmett's mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, in 1995, he promised to do whatever he could to bring
her son's killers to justice. Unfortunately, Mamie Till-Mobley died in 2003 before this documentary was
released and before she was able to see the Justice Department reopen the case.

• Emmett Till's murder is considered one of the main events that helped launch the Civil Rights Movement.
Till's mother wanted everyone to see what had been done to her son, so she held an open casket funeral
for him and allowed for his body to be photographed. "Jet" magazine put a picture of Emmett Till on the
cover and this photograph riveted and angered people throughout the country leading to increased
determination to fight racism in the United States.

• Although the documentary contains an enormous amount of information, there is even more available on
the commentary track on the DVD. For example, Keith Beauchamp discusses the fact that there may have
been as many as 14 people involved in the murder of Emmett Till.

Awards

• "The Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till" was nominated for a 2007 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding
Dramatic Special.
