Movie Summary |
"The Learning Tree" was directed by Gordon Parks and is based on his semi-autobiographical novel
about growing up in a small, segregated town during the late 1920s.
It's not often that a director gets to make a movie that is based on a book that he wrote. Thus, "The Learning
Tree" movie is even more special because it was written and directed by Gordon Parks - one of the most
gifted and multi-talented African-American directors ever.
The story is about the life of a young teenager named Newt, who is coming of age in a small town in Kansas
during the late 1920s and early 1930s.. It offers an interesting perspective of this time showing both the warm
bonds Newt has with his family and the difficult experiences he encounters because of his race.
Sentimental in feel, "The Learning Tree" provides an insightful perspective on life for a 15 yr. old Black teen
during a time long before the Civil Rights Movement. |
