Description

A Provocative Film!

"The Spook Who Sat By the Door" was an underground bootleg film for years because it was suddenly and mysteriously removed from movie theatres in the United States within three weeks of its release.

The story is about a quiet, unassuming African-American man who becomes the first African-American to complete the CIA training program. To his peers in the program and even to agency personnel, he seems to be an "Uncle Tom." But little does everyone realize that he is an underground revolutionary leader who is determined to get freedom for his people in the inner city.

Trivia

• When "The Spook Who Sat by the Door" was first released in 1973, people in the major cities lined up around the block to see it. But, mysteriously, the movie disappeared from theatres after only three weeks. The director, Ivan Dixon, believed that the film was removed because of FBI pressure. Dixon (and others) asserted that the FBI forced the removal of "The Spook Who Sat by the Door" in theatres as part of its Counter Intelligence Program with the reasoning that the movie might incite riots in the inner city.

• "The Spook Who Sat by the Door" is based on the novel of the same name by Sam Greenlee. The DVD features an interview commentary with Sam Greenlee. Also, Greenlee helped to co-write the movie version. The film is very close to the storyline of the book.

• The director of "The Spook Who Sat by the Door", Ivan Dixon, became quite famous for his role as Sgt. James 'Kinch' Kinchloe in the television series "Hogan's Heroes." However, he was also a notable movie director and film actor. Ivan Dixon appears in these two Top 100 Black Classic Movies: Car Wash and Nothing But a Man.

• Jazz great Herbie Hancock composed the soundtrack for the film.
