"Son of Ingagi" Opening Movie Scene
Movie Summary
"Son of Ingagi" is the first all Black cast horror movie ever known to be made.
It is a historical film, too, because it was a "Race Movie" that was created by African-American filmmakers for African-American audiences. The production quality for a film like this is not going to be very high because of the limited financial resources that African-American filmmakers had at the time.
"Son of Ingagi" is about a wealthy African-American scientist who goes to Africa and brings back an ape. Through experimentation, she manages to turn the ape into a half-man, half-ape creature. The creature goes into a rage! Can it be stopped?
Trivia
• Spencer Williams wrote the screenplay and performed in "Son of Ingagi" as Detective Nelson. Spencer Williams was one of the most well-known African-American directors who made a lot of Race Movies in the 1940s. One of the movies that he directed, "The Blood of Jesus" is a Top 100 Black Classic Movie.
• "Son of Ingagi" was heralded in the African-American newspapers at the time for its "racial advancement" because of its depiction of Black people in professional jobs - scientists, lawyer, detective. Also, the movie shows an African-American newlywed couple in a positive light. These portrayals meant a lot of African-American audiences at the time.
• "Son of Ingagi" was also briefly titled "House of Horror."
