Excellent picture quality and bonus documentaries
This
special edition offers many benefits over the
originally released DVD.
The picture quality is better and it contains four
interesting documentaries. The documentaries are
short, but they provide good background information
about the movie and the book.
On the bonus DVD, you'll see and hear from people
involved with making "The Color Purple." This includes
author, Alice Walker, director, Steven Spielberg, and
producer Quincy Jones.
You'll also hear stories from the film's major
actors including Whoopi Goldberg, Oprah Winfrey, Danny
Glover and more.
Better Picture Quality
When "The Color Purple" was
first released for home viewing, DVD was just emerging
as a format. Thus, like many movies at the time, the
DVD quality was less than ideal.
One of "The Color Purple's" appealing features is its
beautiful cinematography. All of this has been
enhanced in the special edition version. "The Color
Purple" was re-mastered and an all-new digital transfer
was done. The result is a much higher picture quality
on DVD.
Documentary 1: "Conversations with Ancestors:
The Color Purple"
In this segment, you'll hear
from Alice Walker, the Pulitzer Prize winning author
of "The Color Purple." She talks about her inspiration
for writing the book, winning the Pulitzer Prize, and
her ancestors' influence on the characters.
Also, Steven Spielberg and Quincy Jones speak about
the early stages of making the movie. Amongst the many
things that are discussed, Steven Spielberg talks
about the risk that was taken to select him as
director of this African-American film.
Documentary 2: "A Collaboration of Spirits:
Casting and Acting The Color Purple"
The casting
in "The Color Purple" was extraordinary. This segment
talks about how the various members of the cast were
chosen.
You'll see and hear from all of the major actors in
the film and how they were selected. You'll also hear
about casting from the casting director, Rueben
Cannon.
Of particular note is the fact that both Whoopi
Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey made their film debuts in "The Color Purple." When they were cast in the movie,
both of them were relatively unknown.
Documentary 3: "Cultivating a Classic: The
Making of the Color Purple"
This segment gives a
behind-the-scenes look at the technical details of
filming the movie. Costuming, lighting, location
selection and set decorations are all discussed.
You'll learn about the crew's careful attention to
detail in order to make the movie historically
accurate and visually appealing.
Documentary 4: "The Color Purple: The
Musical"
This segment focuses on the musical
score for "The Color Purple." Quincy Jones talks about
how he developed the movie's soundtrack. At this point
in his career, he had established himself as an
accomplished composer and his mastery is evident in
the musical tone throughout the film.
