Excellent TV Series Showcasing Botswana
“The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency” is a delightful television series now available on DVD. Produced and shown by HBO, this program is based on the bestselling book series by Alexander McCall Smith. Unlike many other HBO produced programs, “The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency” has no graphic sex, violence or profanity. Instead, it is a wonderful mystery show that the entire family can enjoy.
Filmed and Based in Botswana, Africa
Botswana’s beautiful music, art and customs are central to the program. “The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency” is the first television program to be filmed in the country and provides a wonderful look at Bostwana’s culture, countryside and people.
Mystery Storylines
The star of the show is Jill Scott, an African-American Grammy award winning artist. She plays Precious Ramotswe, an African woman who decides to use the money that she has inherited from her father to open a detective agency in the city of Gabarone. Since there are no other female detective agencies in Botswana, her agency becomes the first female detective agency in the country.
The cases Precious Ramotswe handles are personal, puzzling mysteries that her clients want to get solved. In one case, she is helping a woman find out if the man posing as her father is really her biological father or an imposter. In another case, she is helping a wife find out if her husband is cheating on her.
Even though Precious Ramotswe’s cases are interesting mysteries in and of themselves, the shows are much more than a “whodunit” detective program. Far more impressive is the scenery of Botswana, the culture of the people that you learn about and the fantastic casting of the main characters.
Great Cast
In addition to Jill Scott (who is perfectly cast in the lead), the show also has a superb cast of regular characters who add comedy and romance. The three other main cast members are:
Grace Makutsi (Anika Noni Rose) who stars as Precious Ramotswe's inquisitive, humorous but somewhat uptight personal assistant
JLB Matekoni (Lucian Msamati) who is a kindhearted auto mechanic with a romantic interest in Precious and
BK (Desmond Dube), a friendly hairdresser next door to her detective agency who is always willing to give advice and is sometimes drawn into her cases
Highly Recommended
We consider “The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency” to be one of the best new television shows available on DVD. It is much more than a television detective show. It is a family-friendly program that shows the beautiful side of Botswana and its people. We highly recommend it.
