| Brief Biography |
Ruby Dee is an actress who has had a career on the stage, screen, and television for over fifty years. Like her husband, Ossie Davis, she began her acting career on stage. From 1941-1943, she was appeared in a number of productions from the highly-regarded American Negro Theatre (ANT).
She first gained national attention after appearing on Broadway in the black adaptation of Anna Lucasta. (The movie version of Anna Lucasta is a Top 100 BlackClassicMovies.com film.)
Ruby Dee has appeared in a number of Top 100 BlackClassicMovies.com films including The Jackie Robinson Story (1950), No Way Out (1950), A Raisin in the Sun (1961), Purlie Victorious (1963), Buck and the Preacher (1972), Roots: The Next Generations (1979) and Do the Right Thing (1989).
In addition to her acting career, Ruby Dee has written a number of books, including two books of poetry and a joint autobiography with her husband, Ossie Davis. |
