| Brief Biography |
Dorothy Dandridge was the first African-American woman to be nominated for a Best Actress Academy Award. It was for her outstanding performance in the all-black-cast movie Carmen Jones.
Dorothy Dandridge began her career as a singer and dancer. She was a member of a group called “The Dandridge Sisters” which included her sister Vivian and another singer named Etta Jones. The Dandridge Sisters toured around the country and eventually became regular performers at Harlem’s famed Cotton Club.
After The Dandridge Sisters disbanded, Dorothy Dandridge started a solo singing career and became a very popular nightclub singer.
She began her film career with smaller roles in a various films. However, Dorothy Dandridge became a superstar after her performance in Carmen Jones.
