Denzel Washington made his professional acting debut in the 1977 made-for-television movie, Wilma. He met wife, Paulette Pearson while making this movie. His next major professional endeavor was as Dr. Phillip Chandler on the popular television series, St. Elsewhere which ran from 1982-1988.
